Senior Capstone Project

Partner with LoveSac

Project 1

Goal: Work with LoveSac to perfect foam testing technique.

- Designed, calculated and assembled electrical system for project

Senior Capstone Project with LoveSac, building quality assurance testing mechanism. Perfect challenge to work with a big company to develop product with electrical, mechanical, and software components.

Boat Project

Project 1

Goal: Design, test and build transmission for an electric boat.

Skills & Learning:

CAD
- Using Onshape for cloud based modeling
Dynamics
- Ran load calculations on gears, driveshafts and bearings
3D Printing
- Utilized 3d printing for quick prototyping

Junior Year my team and I built an electric motor driven boat. I specifically designed, modeled, and tested the driveshaft. Great culmination of years on mechanical engineering studying!

Fracture Analysis Project

Project 2

Goal: Learn fundementals for fracture prediction and analysis.

Skills & Learning:

FEA
- Learned basics of finite element analysis
LAMMPS
- Leaned basics of quantam fracture analysis
Ansys
- Learned basics of continuum fracture analysis

Using Ansys, LAMMPS, and other software to predict and test crack propagation on 3D printed materials and shapes. We then derived data driven insights to model test pieces more crack resistant.

Thermal Solutions Project

Project 2

Goal: Model and build energy wicking device.

Skills & Learning:

Thermal Design
- Referenced thermal knowledge for quick load calulations for greater efficencies
Documentation
- Used Microsoft office for PowerPoint presentations and Excel documentation

Heat transfer project with a modeling and simulation based approach. Using ANSYS and fusion to derive an energy wicking device to cool soup 10x faster.

Goal: Predict and model propeller efficiencies.

Skills & Learning:

Ansys Fluent
- Interpreted dynamic streamline data for easy viewing
Fluid Dynamics
- Referenced Fluiuds knowledge for quick calulations

Using Ansys fluent to design and test different propellers for a boat.

LiDaR Mapping Solution

Project 3

Goal: Build and paint model of land for owner.

Skills & Learning:

Python
- Processed data faster to make 3d model with LiDaR data
ARCGIS
- Utilized GIS for mapping data
Consultation
- Drafted contracts and scope for delivery of goods

3D printing a map for a client who owned a ranch on over 100 acres of land. Used Python and ARCGIS to model the area.

Arcade Project

Project 4

Goal: Design and build fun arcade game for the Carnival.

Skills & Learning:

Micro-Controllers
- Used arduinos to communicate RFID and game data to IOT
CAD
- Using OnShape for cloud based modeling
Circuits
- Worked specifically on RFID and strain gauges

Making a fun arcade game to showcase electrical and mechanical skills during my sophmore year in university. Based off of a hammer style arcade game.

3D Pickleball Volunteer Work

Project 4

Goal: 3D print ornamental pickleball for the community.

Skills & Learning:

Consultation
- Evaluated needs and drafted contracts and scope agreements
Community Outreach
- Found community need and reached out service project

Worked with the local Parks and Rec department to model, build, and install a pickleball topper for the pickleball court. The court was later used to host a Pro Pickleball Tournament.

Load Analysis

Project 4

Goal: Predict failure and load ratings for a bearing.

Skills & Learning:

Ansys
- Used finite element analysis to predict failure

Used simulation based physics software to compare different roller bearings for a specific load to ensure a low factor of safety.
